CHRIS HALES RESIDENT SCHOLARSHIP

CHRIS HALES RESIDENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Chris Hales was a dedicated CAD resident and we would like to extend his legacy by providing a free 6-month residency at Chicago Art Department for a new or emerging artist. Chris’ goal was to “output creativity in various media platforms, whether it be music, video, painting, graffiti, sketching, photography, etc…” As such we are seeking to raise a minimum of $1200 in order to offer a 6-month residency in his name, for a prolific and multi-faceted artist. If we are able, CAD will also explore other ways to honor Chris, including the purchase of a new public address (PA) system in Chris’ honor, naming the piece of equipment after him and allowing future sound artists at CAD to learn about his legacy. Once we secure funding, CAD will present an application process for any interested artists.

3 WAYS TO SUPPORT THE FUND*

1) FINANCIAL DONATIONS. Cash, check, or credit/debit through Paypal.

2) SILENT AUCTION ITEMS. The Afters Cool Show (April 10, 2010), will have original artwork by Chris Hales, available to bid on by silent auction (bidding ends at 10pm).

3) PURCHASE ART. A number of artists have submitted art about Chris Hales and his legacy. These items are available for purchase at the Afters Cool Show (April 10, 2010), with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Chris Hales Resident Scholarship Fund.

*The Chicago Art Department is a 501(c)3 Not-For-Profit Corporation. All donations are tax-deductible.

Chris Hales was originally from Hartford, CT, he left to attend Saint Xavier University in Chicago where he quickly became one with the emerging arts scene, though known primarily for his DJing. While in school Christian became fascinated with graphic design and continued to pursue a career as a designer eventually leading to several jobs at graphic design companies throughout Chicago. Chris was also a music producer for Afters Cool Society, as well as a respected member of the DJ community, performing throughout the U.S and overseas. As a resident artist at Chicago Art Department since 2005, Chris participated in group shows, solo exhibitions, and eventually taught a regular DJ program, which provided people with the opportunity to learn about equipment and the larger context of DJ/performance culture. He and his students were regular sound contributors for CAD events. Chris Hales touched many people, and is missed by many more.
