CONTRA CORRIENTE EXHIBITION

Chicago Art Department, North Gallery

Exhibition Time – June 10 – 29

Opens June 10, 6-10pm
Contra Corriente brings together the work of 8 artists and organizations exploring the intersectionality of racial and climate justice on the West side of Chicago. The title, which translates to “against the current” in English, alludes to countermovements by activists and creative laborers fighting against numbing capitalist forces that favor profit over people. The show specifically centers its messaging around environmental issues impacting Little Village, Pilsen, and surrounding communities: displacement, the toxic air pollution that gives the Lower West Side the worst air quality in the city, dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure disproportionately affecting communities of color, and the area’s cement jungles.
